Anapana is the age-old, tried-and-true method of peaceful clarity that means ‘breath awareness’. In Vipassana, Anapana is the beginning portion of our sitting where we focus on our breath below our nostrils and above the upper lip, in a small area that helps us build a relaxed focus.
Doing this exercise strengthens:
- The discipline of our mind,
- Our ability to achieve peace anywhere/ anytime,
- Our ability to uncover our Needs (this clarity is vital to our reduced stress).
Tonight, we will enjoy a 40min quiet Anapana exercise. Every 10 minutes, I will guide us to reduce our area of awareness slowly until we achieve a high degree of relaxed focus by the end of the meditation. This will stabilize our minds and bring us our clarity.
National Geographic’s Stress Movie on Netflix:
I enjoy all the conscious movies that Netflix has been featuring in their online service. I watched one recently called, Stress by National Geographic . The findings are extraordinary…
A baboon tribe in Africa began being studied 30 years ago. Blood was sampled periodically from members of the clan to test levels of 2 hormones associated with stress. These baboons were not stressed due to outside dangers, like lions or famine. They were stressing each other out by showing aggression, fighting and horseplaying, and slapping the females around.
Then something fascinating happened 20 years ago… A resort opened up nearby their clan and this resort threw its meat out into the dumpsters. It happened to be laced with tuberculosis. The baboons that ate the meat first all died. But due to the hierarchy of this clan, all the ones that died happened to be the Alpha-Males; the aggressive baboons that forced their ways to the top and kept the clan nervously on edge.
The clan was left with twice the females than males, and all the males were peaceful baboons that valued hair-combing, hugging, relaxing, and playtime. The clan was instantly changed!! Overnight, they were now peaceful, as all stress had been removed via the alpha-males dying.
It is common for an adolescent baboon to go on Walkabout and find a new clan to join. So this peaceful clan receives aggressive baboons from other clans from time-to-time. Due to entrainment amongst the peaceful clansmen, the aggression gets naturally worked out within 6 months, and the new alpha male begins behaving peacefully like the other loving clansmen. This is identical to what Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, has uncovered when he retrains an aggressive dog back to a socially acceptable level of peace.
The data the stress researchers have amassed in the past 30 years mirrors our human society in all aspects; from hierarchy of society (found in our careers), to weight-gain, to reduced longevity, to ‘control’ of various aspects of our lives the higher we rise in our careers. Whether baboons, dogs, plants, or humans, we all are a part of Nature and follow Universal Law.
Come relax tonight at 6pm Sedona time. With the goal of healthful longevity for one and all, let’s turn the tides in our culture and become the most productive and thoughtful species on the planet, simply by relaxing, uncovering our Needs, and honoring them with full Trust that what we chose is correct for us.
